D. was granted in 1905 with a dissertation, written in Latin, on the vestiages of Doric plays in Attic comedy; in 1906 he began publishing on archaeology and traveling to Greece and Asia Minor; worked as an assistant at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin; was appointed extraordinarius professor at the University of Rostock, Germany, 1910-1916; named full professor at the University of Münster in 1916; became professor at Heidelberg University in 1929; accepted a position at the University of Zurich in 1940, where he reorganized the archaeological museum and advised many students on their dissertations; accepted a lectureship at the University of Basel,1941-1948; retired in 1951 as emeritus at the University of Zurich)
