In his teens, moved to San Diego, California where he graduated from high school, attended Chapman College, and completed his BA at San Diego State University in 1971 and his PhD from University of California, San Diego, in 1982. Taught creative writing and Chicano literature at San Diego State University. Considered the leading Chicano poet of the 1960s.)
